Bay Venues attract more than 1.8 million users despite tough year

In a year that has included aggressive growth targets and completion of significant projects, Bay Venues has again built on its operational and financial performance.

The Tauranga City Council-controlled organisation has recorded many successes over the past year, as highlighted in its annual report. Users of Bay Venues facilities over the year totalled more than 1.8 million (exceeding the targeted 1.5 million); and the year’s work has included hosting a total of 64 regional and international sporting tournaments - 14 more than the aimed for amount.

Major sustainability success has also been noted with the amount of waste diverted to landfills recorded at 56% - more than double what was targeted.

Also pleasing was the 23% increase in the Clubfit membership base.

Tauranga City Council Mayor, Stuart Crosby attributes the success of Bay Venues to the excellent working relationship between Council and Bay Venues, explaining “we have a shared vision and strategy for Bay Venues, which is to provide outstanding civic facilities that can be enjoyed by our growing community."

Bay Venues Chief Executive Gary Dawson recognises the official opening of the University of Waikato Adams Centre for High Performance as a major highlight.

Dawson sees that the Adams Centre (established as a result of collaboration between The University, Council and Bay Venues) has “quickly gained both a national and international reputation for being an outstanding high performance sports training facility.”

Other highlights (of the year ending 30th June) include the refurbishment of Mount Hot Pools; upgrade completion of Clubfit gym facilities at both Greerton and Baywave; hosting of the World Jetsprints Championship at ASB Baypark Stadium; and the hosting of regional/national sport tournaments and events within leisure, aquatic and events facilities.

The report identified financial highlights such as the fact Bay Venues’ revenue earned from external sources has been growing steadily since its establishment in 2013 and that revenue exceeded budget. During the year, Bay Venues invested $7,860,000 in capital projects.

Those major projects - either completed or under way - include establishment of the Adams Centre, Mount Hot Pools refurbishment, ASB Baypark Stadium roof repair, ASB Arena PA system, and Greerton Aquatic and Leisure Centre Clubfit upgrade.

Bay Venues manages recreation and community facilities on behalf of Tauranga City Council, and is 100% Council-owned. There are 24 venues in the Bay Venues network, with that figure also including a number of community centres, halls, and community pools. Centre-run sport and recreation programmes are used by 42,900 customers from pre-schoolers to seniors.
