Avantidrome to hold New Zealand’s first Track Cycling World Cup

New Zealand will host it’s first ever Track Cycling World Cup Competition at the Avantidrome in December 2015.

Just months before the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, this event will welcome over 1000 competitors, team staff and supporters from over 40 countries, to the Waikato region.

To hold an event of this caliber is a huge achievement for the Avantidrome just one year on from its completion.

Commenting on the Competition hosting, Avantidrome Chief Executive Geoff Balme stated “events are a key part of the National Cycling Center of Excellence concept.

“One of the requirements of the government and Cycling New Zealand was that the facility would be capable of hosting major international events, which it certainly is.”

This event will be the largest track cycling event ever to be held in New Zealand and adds to the growing list of major sporting events New Zealand is hosting and delivering.

Balme believes this is great news for the whole region, adding “not only will this event have huge economic benefits for the region, but it also gives locals the opportunity to see world’s best track cyclists compete in their home town.”

Athletes, support staff, and their families will be in the Waikato for some time prior to the event, which will mean a boost in spending and positive effects on our tourism industry.

From a competitive perspective, this event also gives our New Zealand athletes a ‘home town advantage’ at a key qualification event leading up to the Rio Olympics which is hugely beneficial for Cycling New Zealand’s riders and the High Performance program.
