Australasian venue managers excel at international school

A group of six students from Australia and New Zealand have successfully completed the US Graduate Institute Venue Management School at Oglebay in Wheeling, West Virginia, USA.

The International Association of Venue Managers (IAVM) program is presented in conjunction with the US Venue Management School and will make its debut at Australia's Venue Management School in November 2014.

The US Graduate Institute program focuses on leadership and comprises a series of (3.5 hour) deep-learning modules over six days, pitched at middle to senior management.

The Australian and New Zealand students were: Krystle Mutton (Allphones Arena, AEG Ogden); Katherine Norman (Arts Centre Melbourne); Ian Love (Brisbane Entertainment Centre, AEG Ogden); Pietro Delpechitra (The Edge, Auckland); David Fortescue (Allphones Arena, AEG Ogden); and Anthony Duffy (Managing Director, VIPeople).

Duffy, Chair of Australia's Venue Management School (VMS), commented "the entire VMA (Venue Management Association) membership should be very proud of these ambassadors ... they contributed extensively and further enhanced our reputation on an international stage.

"I look forward to personally contacting their employers to reinforce the quality of individuals they have on their teams."

Duffy also highlighted the need for Australia's Venue Management School to align further with the US School, adding "since the inception of our program in 1994, there have been instructor and student exchanges which greatly enhance the knowledge base and relationship between the VMA and IAVM.

"This is an incredibly valuable arrangement, which we will continue to pursue.

"The US school has (also) asked us to consider if we would be prepared to host a US student each year (and) I took the liberty of suggesting the VMS Committee would be pleased to develop that program into the future."

The Australian Graduate Institute will commence in November 2014, with announcements related to programming and instructors expected over the next few months.

Based on Leadership principles, the course will be similar to the US model, tailored for local needs. The school will be restricted to graduates of the VMS program, with a cap on the number of students each year.

VMA members interested in further information or wishing to formally express early interest in enrolling in the Australian Graduate Institute should contact Dean of the Graduate Institute, Tim Worton on his email: tworton@aegogden.com
