AusCycling’s Ride Nation program to get $5 million in Federal Government funding
Community bike riding is set to benefit from a $5 million commitment from the Australian Government which will assist AusCycling deliver its Ride Nation program to more people across the country.
Announced today as one of 36 new programs sharing in $10.3 million in funds from Sport Australia’s Participation Grant program - providing more opportunities for Australians to connect with sport and get physically active - the commitment has been welcomed by AusCycling.
It coincided with the unveiling of the courses for 2022 UCI Road Cycling World Championships to be held in Wollongong in September.
Ride Nation is AusCycling's dedicated participation brand aimed at encouraging more people to enjoy riding their bike, while also improving environmental sustainability and encouraging riding a bike as a means of getting around.
AusCycling Chief Executive, Marne Fechner commented “Wollongong was always going to stage a world-class Championship and celebration of cycling. What this funding does is ensure that the team can set a new standard for international events of this kind.
“Equally important is that we can use what will be a dynamic and compelling experience to create a sustainable legacy of programs, infrastructure, training, and activities to bring the joys and benefits of riding to many more Australians.”
Nicole Adamson, AusCycling’s Executive General Manager of Participation Products, added “we are excited we can take good work of Ride Nation to achieve broader community engagement.
“We know that bike riding has health, environment and social connection benefits, and we look forward to working with more communities to embed bike riding.”
Federal Minister for Sport Richard Colbeck said the new funding will help boost the event’s international profile, support sustainability measures and increase accessibility and inclusivity for spectators and volunteers.
Minister Colbeck noted “the UCI Road Cycling World Championships will be the first in a decade of global sporting events heading to Australia, culminating in the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
“We have a long and proud history of hosting major international sport events. They bring Australians together, showcase our world-class sporting stars and inspire future generations.”
Among the $10.3 million in funding from Sport Australia’s Participation Grant program, it has today been announced that AUSTSWIM will receive $250,000 to address the current shortage of swim and water safety teachers.
AusCycling represents over 52,000 members across BMX, BMX Freestyle, Cyclo-cross, Esports, Mountain Bike, Para-Cycling, Road, Track and Lifestyle (recreational and commuter) riding throughout Australia.
