AUSactive appoints new members to Health and Fitness Industry Standards Council

AUSactive has appointed four new members to the Health and Fitness Industry Standards Council (‘Council’) - an esteemed group guiding the standards, quality and professionalism of Australia’s health and fitness industry.

Joining the Council are Deborah Moore, Nadine Kemp, RJ Houston, and Rhys James, whose combined expertise will drive the sector forward through innovation, collaboration, and strong leadership.

AUSactive Chief Executive Barrie Elvish said each of these new inductees brings a powerful blend of experience and fresh perspective.

Elvish noted “from grassroots health promotion to global wellness innovation, they represent the future of our industry and we are confident they will uphold and enhance the high standards the Council is known for.”

Deborah Moore has spent more than three decades in health promotion, fitness, and project leadership across government, not-for-profit, and private sectors. A driving force behind the award-winning Heartmoves program and the Active Stronger Better initiative, Moore brings a deep commitment to sustainable wellbeing for all Australians.

Nadine Kemp, with over 25 years of operational and strategic leadership across council-run and YMCA-managed recreation facilities, is well recognised for her role in mentoring future leaders and promoting excellence in facility management and community recreation.

RJ Houston, currently General Manager at Royal Life Saving Australia, is a national thought leader in safety, workforce development, and aquatic industry advocacy. With a strong track record in policy and standards development, RJ’s contribution will strengthen the Council’s influence across multiple sectors.

Rhys James brings global experience in fitness and wellness through his role as Wellness Institute & Community Manager at Technogym. His international insights, including supporting the 2024 Olympic Games as a Technogym Ambassador, position him as a valuable voice in the Council’s forward-facing work.

Elvish adds “Our Council must reflect the diversity and dynamism of the industry it serves.

“These four professionals bring both passion and credibility, ensuring that the standards we set are relevant, inclusive, and future-ready.”

As AUSactive welcomes new energy into the Council, it also recognises the exceptional service of Professor Elisabeth Wilson-Evered (former Chair), Gavin Aqualina and Cheye Hill, who are stepping down after years of dedicated leadership.

“Gavin and Cheye have been cornerstones of the Council’s success over the years,” Elvish advised.

“Their commitment to industry integrity, safety, and progress has helped shape the sector we see today. We thank them sincerely for their outstanding contribution.”

The Council plays a critical role in maintaining the credibility and quality of the industry, developing frameworks that support a safe, effective, and professional fitness landscape for all Australians.

Elvish continued “at AUSactive, we’re committed to continuous improvement and that starts with leadership. This new chapter for the Council is a powerful step toward a stronger, more unified exercise and active health.”
