Aquatic Super Series returns minus BHP Billiton sponsorship
Western Australia’s Aquatic Super Series international swimming event will be returning to Perth’s HBF Stadium on Friday 5th and Saturday 6th February next year but will be without its sponsorship from BHP Billiton.
Over the last four years the Swimming Australia managed event has grown to become one swimming’s biggest attractions.
However, BHP Billiton has decided to discontinue its sponsorship of the event, reportedly as a result of reviewing their social investment opportunities in Western Australia.
This year the event, which includes swimming, water polo and an open water race in Swan River, had been sponsored by Tourism WA (Western Australia) with smaller sponsorships from Speedo, Nova 937 and The Western Australian newspaper.
The event has grown considerably over the last three years.
In 2013, the Australian Dolphins Swim Team hosted teams from China and South Africa, with Japan and Brazil added in 2014. In 2015 the Australians went head to head with teams from Japan, China and the United States.
This event is not only an important part of the competitive calendar for the country’s elite athletes, but it has been developed into a significant part of Western Australia’s grassroots develop program.
Swim and waterpolo camps have been held in conjunction with the event where youngsters had the chance to be coached and interact with some of the country’s top athletes.
Seemingly set to be a smaller scale event in 2016, China and Japan have been confirmed as the competing participants.
