Swim Smooth app helps coaches aid stroke techniques and reduce injuries

By Nigel Benton

Popular swim coaching method Swim Smooth has released a new app, designed to aid the coaching of amateur swimmers.

Created by Perth-based Briton Paul Newsome, who coaches at the Claremont Aquatic Centre, the Swim Smooth app aims to give swimmers information to manage their training and avoid injuries. swimmers age their training without a coach and avoid injuries.

Newsome was motivated to create the app to help the large number of adults who have shoulder pain when swimming and need to improve their stroke technique.

A combination of training schedules being interrupted by COVID-19 and others increasing their swimming activity, often for something to do after the shutdown, meant there was a demand for a device that could remotely coach swimmers.

Introducing the app, Newsome explained “we have seen unprecedented levels of participation in our squad sessions since the pool re-opened in June because everyone wants to get back to their swimming and tackle some of the bigger local events this year in the absence of being able to travel.”

While developed with Apple using their existing software and data science team spread across the world, Garmin-model watch users can still connect their devices to record swims and get analysis.

Newsome noted “swimmers with Apple watches can now access feedback on their stroke technique based on proven form and pace-based training methodologies that local triathletes and open water swimmers have put to tremendous success in local, national and international events.”

The app can record open water and lap pool training, and has 1000 pre-recorded technique lessons and swim sessions that can be scaled down for a 30-minute lunchtime swim.

Coaches can also benefit by getting information from each swimmer, with Newsome adding “the software has proven with our team of international certified coaches to add huge benefit to the solo coach by allowing them to gain insight into every swimmer’s progress even during busy squad sessions, and in many ways it’ll make the coach’s job much more effective.”

Newsome, first developed Swim Smooth as video-based stroke correction analysis tool which led to him releasing a DVD-based ‘learn to swim’ initiative.

Swim Smooth is backed by a worldwide network of coaches.
