Aquanation gets official opening
Friday 14th August saw the official opening of the $52.2 million Aquanation aquatic and recreation centre by Maroondah City Mayor Tony Dib.
Speaking to a group of dignitaries, Mayor Dib spoke about what a milestone event this was for Council and the Maroondah community, stating "today is an historic moment for Council as we open our largest infrastructure project to date.
"This magnificent facility has been four years in planning, and two years in construction and it is wonderful today to celebrate the success of all of this hard work.
“Aquanation will benefit the health and wellbeing of the Maroondah community and people more broadly for years to come. Already close to 3000 people have joined as Aquanation foundation members, and we expect memberships will continue to grow as people visit the centre and see for themselves what it has to offer.
“We are so pleased to welcome all of the local clubs that will utilise the facility, including the Ringwood Diving Club, which will now have both wet and dry training facilities that are arguably the best in the Country."
Mayor Dib also thanked the Maroondah community for "being part of this journey", recalling the closure of the former Ringwood Aquatic Centre and concerns from residents who thought the new centre might never happen.
An open weekend on 15th and 16th August enabled residents to enjoy the facility free of charge before it opened to the general public.
Aquanation features a 66.5 metre 10 lane pool and diving facilities, a warm water pool, a dedicated learn to swim pool, large toddler and children’s leisure play pool, two large waterslides, a 1000 metre² gym large gym with three separate group fitness rooms, child care facilities and a café. The facility is fully accessible with ramp access to all bodies of water.
The $52.2 million Aquanation project was funded by Council, the Australian Government as part of the Regional Development Australia Fund ($10 million), the Victorian Government through the Community Facility Funding Program ($3 million), Bendigo Bank ($200,000) and EastLink ($20,000).
Aquanation was designed by Peddle Thorp Architects, and built by Kane Constructions.
It was project managed closely by Davis Langdon.
