Amphitheatre to be centrepiece of new Gold Coast Cultural Precinct

An outdoor theatre, integrated into the surrounding Artscape, is to become the centrepiece of Stage 1 of the Gold Coast Cultural Precinct development.

To be open in time for the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games, the garden-style amphitheatre includes landscaping over the stage and wings, with potential for grassed observation areas, picnic spots, play equipment and areas for artistic activation.

By 2018 it will be ready to host a wide array of performances, functions and events.

With Council endorsing the new concept on 11th September 2015, ARM Architecture and Topotek are now progressing design to enable Managing Contractors ADCO Constructions Pty Ltd to begin Stage 1 work early in 2016.

The amphitheatre, with its raked central lawn, represents a new direction for what will be the precinct’s versatile outdoor space and Stage 1 focal point. It replaces the previous pavilion-style design (known as The Splash) with the new concept developed following market testing, consultation and feedback from stakeholders and potential users.

Coming at a comparable cost, the new concept also performs the same function as the Splash.

It will still be purpose-built and equipped with capacity for audiences of up to 1000 people, and the opportunity to bump in equipment for larger programmed events.
