Airport welcome for Sydney FC and Newcastle United

The people of Dunedin are being urged to roll out a South Island welcome for the arrival of top 10 English Premier League club Newcastle United and A League club Sydney FC, when they touch down in Dunedin today (Sunday 20th July).

The teams will take to the field at the Forsyth Barr Stadium at 7.30pm on Tuesday 22nd July..

The Newcastle United team will fly directly into New Zealand with their flight scheduled to arrive at Dunedin International Airport (ground floor international arrivals) at 12.05pm on Sunday. Sydney FC also arrives at the Airport later that day, at 8.45pm.

The King’s and Queen’s High Schools’ Kapa Haka group will welcome teams on arrival and then the City of Dunedin Pipe Band will pipe them through the terminal.

Dunedin City Council Events Special Projects Co-ordinator Tammy Jackman is encouraging fans to head to the airport to welcome both teams to Dunedin.

Mayor Dave Cull says it is a great opportunity for fans in the south to see footballers of this level, especially so soon after the World Cup.

Mayor Cull explained “Dunedin has always been a city of sports fans and having an English Premiere League side of the calibre of Newcastle United appearing in the city is a real treat.

“It is a side with a long and proud tradition and to have it go head-to-head with Sydney FC, one of the leading clubs in Australia’s burgeoning A-League, is a mouthwatering prospect for football fans in the south.”

Jackman adds “this is a wonderful opportunity to experience world class international football. We would like to see people not only attending the game, but also getting along to some of the community events that are happening as well.”

Fans also have the opportunity to watch their favourite teams at open training sessions on Monday 21st July. Newcastle United players are training at Forsyth Barr Stadium while Sydney FC players are training at Forrester Park

This is the only South Island match as part of the Football United Tour involving Newcastle United, West Ham United, Sydney FC and Wellington Phoenix.
