Across the Lake Swim turns 50

Taupo's longest running event, the swim from Acacia Bay to Three Mile Bay turns 50 next month and the jubilee celebrations are attracting hundreds to enter, watch and enjoy the festivities.

Some of the original 1963 participants are expected to be at the start Along with kayakers who traditionally support swimmers in the water.

Taupo Moana Rotary Club owns the event and organiser and member Josh Edlin says he's looking forward to the half-century celebrations.

Edlin explains "we've put together a retro theme and, at Three Mile Bay, where swimmers finish, there (will be) plenty of action and entertainment for non-swimmers, families and spectators.

"That said, water safety is key and we hope the event can highlight water safety measures and messages."

The 4.2 kilometre swim across the lake and 1 kilometre short course concludes with a breakfast barbecue and entertainment.

Edlin adds "the swim is a great training opportunity for those competing in the Ironman and makes up part of the Erin Baker, Cameron Brown and Tri-Taupo four awards."

The Across the Lake swim is on 23rd February with registrations closing on 22nd February.

Taupo District Event Manager Nick Reader says it's great to have an event run for 50 years, concluding "what a wonderful achievement! It just shows that events are well embedded in the culture of the Taupo District."
