$3 million pledged for new Bendigo theatre

The Victorian Government says a new theatre will boost Bendigo's reputation as a regional arts hub.

Victoria Premier and Minister for the Arts Ted Baillieu confirmed the Sandhurst Community Theatre project will be awarded $3 million of State Government funding towards the $25.8 million project.

The Victorian Government funding is in addition to $12.8 million already allocated to the project by the Federal Government's Regional Development Australia Fund.

The funding will go towards plans for a commercial grade 1,000-seat theatre complex at the heritage-listed Old Bendigo Gaol that will offer music, dance and drama studios, general learning areas, a commercial kitchen and an upgraded theatre entrance foyer and other amenities.

The project will provide community groups, educational providers and commercial operators with high-class theatre facilities and offer local people access to more cultural and social activities.

Making the announcement at a Liberal Party council meeting in Bendigo, Premier Baillieu explained "the project will generate key economic benefits through capital expenditure, to jobs that will create local flow-on effects during and following construction.

"Bendigo has had an extraordinary part in Victoria's history. Bendigo is currently a fantastic place to live and Bendigo is going to have an increasingly important role in the future of Victoria."

Deputy Premier and Minister for Regional and Rural Development added "the theatre will include stalls and balcony seating areas, as well as a stage, performance space, back stage, dance studios and administration areas."
