2015 Pacific Games preparations on schedule
With less than 200 days until the start of the 2015 Pacific Games in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea, the Games Organising Committee (GOC) is very confident that the event will be delivered as planned.
Announcing that more than half of funds needed to organise 2015 Pacific Games have been raised through sponsorship, GOC Chief Executive Peter Stewart highlighted the magnitude of the Games, advising that essential goods and services required to enable the successful delivery of the Games are in-place.
Stewart explained “we are very confident that the Games will be delivered as planned because of the number of critical and very important things we have achieved and have already committed for next year.”
GOC, which is responsible for the delivery of the Games, has revealed that K23 million (US$11.5 million) has been raised through sponsorship with 19 organisations comprising of state owned entities and private corporate organisations signed up in three different categories: platinum, gold and silver.
Bank of South Pacific is the official sponsor of the Games, with platinum sponsors comprising copper and gold manufacturer Ok Tedi, as well as Telikom, SP Brewery, PNG Power Ltd and Puma Energy.
Others, including Olympic TOP partner Coca-Cola, are among a total of 10 gold sponsors, while car rental company Hertz is a silver sponsor.
Stewart believes that puts the GOC in a strong strong position to reach the total target of K60 million (US$23 million) in funding, stating "we are on track and are very confident that we will reach our target to deliver these Games successfully.
"We are humbled by the amount of responses we have received from corporate and State owned organisations to help fund this Games.
"The Government of Papua New Guinea has been very supportive and we want to thank the Prime Minister and his Ministers for backing and for the funds they have made available for the Games.”
Some of GOC’s key achievements this year have been the appointment of Makoda who will be producing the opening and closing ceremonies.
Eurest (PNG) Catering & Services Ltd will to look after the 3,000 athletes, who will be fed on a daily basis with over 20,000 meals served at the Games Village.
The Committee has also engaged a locally based company, Lae Ever Clean to provide cleaning services for the Games Village.
The Pacific Games will be held from 4th to 18th July next year, with 24 countries set to compete, including, Australia and New Zealand for the first time.
Both will compete in rugby sevens, weightlifting, sailing and taekwondo competitions, while New Zealand will also participate in football.
