Swan Hill Rural City Council confirms funding for first step of Jaycee Park redevelopment

A funding partnership between Swan Hill Rural City Council and the Victorian Government will see the redevelopment of the city’s Jaycee Park commence in 2016.

The first of several projects that received a go ahead before Christmas, the redevelopment will include an Indigenous-themed meeting place will be constructed at the park, providing a safe space to sit and relax.

It will also be used as a more formal space for community meetings and discussions to take place.

One of only 14 projects across Victoria to receive funding through the Public Safety Infrastructure program, the meeting place was designed by renowned local Indigenous artist Quinton Atkinson,

Swan Hill Rural City Council Mayor Les McPhee said he was thrilled to hear the project received funding.

Mayor McPhee commented “competing against bigger metropolitan councils for funding can be tough, (so) to have this project selected is a great outcome for local residents, the wider community and visitors to the area.

“The community consultation throughout this process has been fantastic. The feedback received highlighted the need for a space like this and it will be great to see it delivered and being used well into the future.”

Construction of the meeting place is expected to be completed by mid next year.

The Jaycee Park redevelopment is an ongoing process and a survey is available for local residents to continue to provide thoughts and ideas.

Full concept plans for the redevelopment are anticipated to be completed by June 2016.
