YMCA bans mermaid tails from Victorian pools over drowning fears

Mermaid tails, a popular Christmas gift, have been banned by the YMCA at their managed swimming pools in Victoria.

Following warnings from consumer group Choice and Victorian Consumer Affairs Minister Jane Garrett, the YMCA introduced the ban, which applies at 50 pool, over drowning fears.

The pre Christmas warning from CHOICE and NSW Fair Trading Commissioner Rod Stowe' advised of "the potential danger of mermaid tails, a water play product that binds a child’s legs and acts as a flipper so the child can swim 'like a mermaid'."

The warning came in the wake of a video from the US showing a little girl trying out her mermaid tail in a backyard pool and apparently getting stuck upside down before being rescued by her mother.

Explaining the YMCA decision, spokeperson Laura Munns stated “the decision ... is about ensuring the safety of all people swimming in our aquatic centres

“This ban is in response to the dangers associated with these products ... mermaid tails create an unnecessary risk to our patrons by restricting swimming ability.”

CHOICE Director of Campaigns and Communications Matt Levey commented “this move underlines the potential dangers of mermaid tails, and clearly some swimming facilities believe the risk is unacceptable.

“No matter where your child is swimming, consumers should be aware that these toys are not recommended for children under six years of age, and require strict adult supervision.”

Minister Garrett urged parents who have bought the mermaid tails to exercise caution when their children are using the toy, concluding “mermaid tails are a new craze among kids, but we are urging parents to check the age warnings before buying.

“The tail binds a child’s legs together, which could have tragic consequences if they are not old enough, or a strong swimmer.”
