YMCA Auckland welcomes new aquatic and recreation facility management contracts
YMCA Auckland has welcomed its taking on the management of 10 of Auckland Council’s aquatic and recreation facilities – effective from 1st July.
The new management contracts follow Auckland Council having last year initiated a tender process for the facility management contracts of 12 aquatics and recreation facilities.
Explaining the success, YMCA Auckland Chief Executive Peter Ferguson states “the YMCA contested 10 of those facilities and were fortunate enough to be selected to operate all of those tendered for.
“Six of the 10 facilities were ones where we had already operated from for many years - and we are extremely proud - and delighted -to be able to continue delivering service, support and innovative programmes to these communities.
“Of real excitement for us, however, was the inclusion of four additional facilities - Cameron Pool, Glen Innes Pool, Lynfiled Recreation Centre and Onehunga War Memorial Pool - which expands the network of sites, centres and delivery opportunities for us.
“The 'start date' for these facilities is looming and there is building excitement as we ready ourselves to bring, not only, great services to each of these facilities - but also a strong family and community 'flavour' ... our hallmarks.
“As with any change - there is an element of nervousness from all involved: members, new staff, local communities - and even ourselves. However we have a strong commitment to ensuring seamless continuity where ever we can - as well as friendly faces.”
YMCA has also acknowledged the help it has received from equipment supplier Blue Fitness, whose staff helped install 20 truck loads of brand new fitness gear - including 100 Spin bikes, 100 Star Trac cardio units and over 200 pieces of Hoist Strength equipment - in the four new locations over recent days.
YMCA Auckland operates more than 20 facilities, 12 of which are through partnerships with local councils. Its centres provide the community with a vast range of recreational and sport programmes catering to all ages and abilities and include fitness clubs, aquatic and recreation facilities, three camps, two accommodation buildings, three licensed early childhood centres, nine indoor stadiums and one equestrian park.
YMCA’s internationally recently joined together for the first time in a shared celebration of the official birthday of the world-wide YMCA.
Celebrations focussed on 6th June, the day the Association was founded by George Williams in 1844.
A statement on the anniversary from YMCA Sydney explained “although George may not recognise the YMCA of today - you no longer need to be young, male or Christian to be part of the Y - it is an association still focused on healthy living, empowering young people and social impact.”
