World record for Karapiro
The recent 2010 World Rowing Championships at Karapiro, New Zealand were attended by 66,771 spectators - a new record for the event, beating a the previous highest spectator number of 65,600 for the 2007 World Rowing Championships in Munich, Germany.
A delighted Organising Committee Chief Executive Tom Mayo explained âsetting a new record for spectator numbers is the perfect end to an unforgettable World Championships. We have truly raised the bar in every way."
At the official Closing Ceremony, FISA President Denis Oswald said: "I praise the Organising Committee for having staged such an outstanding event and I include all members of the Organising Committee and volunteers who have been so helpful and friendly to us. It won't take 32 years until we come back. Karapiro 2010 brought the World Championships to new standards and set a new model."
Speaking on the last day of the event, Mayo added âweâre on track to break even but we wonât know for sure till the end of the month. It will take time to factor in the final numbers from areas such as hospitality, bar takings, foreign exchange and so on."
In addition, thereâs a multi-million dollar capital legacy left to Rowing NZ with the upgrades to the rowing course, the improvements to the Mighty River Domain, the new Finish Tower, new coaching boats and launches and much more.
Feedback for the event from the teams, the athletes, the spectators and the media has been overwhelmingly positive. Many have said this is the best World Championships they have ever attended.
