January Busiest Month for NZ Fitness Centres

Fitness New Zealand (FitnessNZ)'s member clubs have recently confirmed what has been believed for years - January is the busiest month of the year for fitness centres joining up new members.

"It's clear that the last two weeks of January more than make up for its quiet start" says FitnessNZ Chief Executive, Richard Beddie, adding "January consistently shows approximately 10% more new members than other months and February follows on from this trend, yielding around 5% more than average."

"In the northern hemisphere (US and Europe) January is the middle of winter, so while the New Year's resolutions help to boost numbers, this is compounded by winter, which is traditionally a busy time for indoor facilities. In New Zealand, a combination of good weather, and holiday season cuts into this, so the January growth is less pronounced than with our northern neighbours."

FitnessNZ's data came from member clubs highlighting club members starting new exercise programs.
