Works commence on matchday facility upgrades at Launceston's UTAS Stadium

Construction is now underway on matchday facility upgrades at the UTAS (University of Tasmania) Stadium redevelopment in Launceston.

As of last week, arrangements for the works were finalised with local firm Fairbrother, which are within the existing Carlton and United Breweries Stand.

The existing matchday facilities will be brought up to Australian tier 2 sporting code guidelines. Umpires, officials and players will enjoy refurbished change rooms, medical, massage and strapping rooms, a briefing room, warm up and training spaces.

First announced as part of the package to attract an AFL club to the state, the UTAS Stadium Redevelopment Project in Launceston is jointly funded by the Federal and Tasmanian Governments with each contributing $65 million.

Commenting on the project, Federal Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government Minister, Catherine King stated “upgrading the existing matchday facilities is the first step in UTAS stadium’s transformation.

“I look forward to seeing the project develop into a premier destination for fans and athletes.

“We’re proud to invest in the sporting infrastructure that grows Launceston’s economy.”

Tasmanian Minister for Sport and Events, Nick Duigan noted “the commencement of the UTAS Stadium Matchday Facility Upgrades is a fantastic step forward in our plan to transform Northern Tasmania.”

Stadiums Tasmania Chief Executive, James Avery added “this is an important milestone for the redevelopment of UTAS Stadium, which will significantly enhance the venue’s match day facilities and ensure the ongoing attraction of marquee events, while providing community users with an elevated event-day experience.

“The upgrade of these facilities is critical for key venue users and cements UTAS Stadium’s standing as a premier sports and entertainment venue that delivers a range of economic, cultural and social outcomes for Northern Tasmania.”

Last week saw the City of Launceston vote to end its ownership of the UTAS Stadium, transferring its responsibilities to the Stadiums Tasmania agency.
