Winter ice attractions open in Perth

Well known for its high temperatures through summer, Perth is approaching the winter school holidays with the opening of two outdoor seasonal attractions.

Skating At Festival opened at Perth’s Elizabeth Quay on Friday (22nd June) offering an open-air pop-up ice skating rink combined with rides, entertainment and food and drink options.

Running until 15th July, the family-friendly event suits all ages and skating skill levels.

Skating At Festival operate their attractions around Australia, in locations including: Melbourne, Sorrento and St Kilda in Victoria; Toowoomba and Brisbane in Queensland and in Sydney, Adelaide and Canberra.

In the port city of Fremantle, Australia’s largest pop-up outdoor ice skating rink will be operating at Esplanade Reserve from 24th June to 16th July.

Winterworld Australia has set up a 600 metre² rink, snow pit and winter-based activities including falling snow, toboggan and inflatable slide rides, and a lodge bar run by The National Hotel offering a fire pit for roasting marshmallows, hot chocolate and mulled wine.

The winter attraction, is seen by the City of Fremantle as part of a plan to make the city a year-round destination.

Last year 60,000 people attended the event and this year they are hoping for more.

Mayor of Fremantle Dr Brad Pettitt explains “Fremantle is a great summer destination, but I think making it a destination for families in winter is key.

“Winterworld has the largest ice rink in Australia as I understand it, it’s good to have it back as it is a popular event.”

Last year 60,000 people attended Winterworld Australia and this year operators are hoping for more.

Mayor Pettit added that the event would complement the harbour city, concluding “Winterworld Fremantle is set to be a great family-friendly event with plenty of entertainment, outdoor fun and local Freo touches transforming the Esplanade into a unique outdoor winter experience this July.”
