West Coast Eagles get Federal funds for new training base

West Coast Eagles' plans for a new training and administrative base at Lathlain Park in inner-eastern Perth have been boosted by the Federal Government's commitment of $10 million to the project.

Prime Minister Tony Abbott made the funding announcement during a visit to Perth on Saturday (22nd August).

The Lathlain Park Precinct Development falls under the auspices of the Town of Victoria Park and a major element of the project is the proposed new training and administrative facility for the AFL club.

Plans for the $60 million base feature two ovals, one with a running track around the perimeter, indoor and outdoor training facilities, a café and a museum along with barbeque areas, a playground and walking trails that will be accessible to the local community.

The Eagles plans to complete the Lathlain Park facility by 2017 ahead of the completion of  the new Perth Stadium at Burswood in March 2018.

Welcoming the funding, West Coast Chief Executive Trevor Nisbett said that the Federal Government’s funding support was of critical importance to the progression of the project.

Nisbett stated "together with the Town of Victoria Park, we are now looking forward to rapidly advancing our plans for the precinct.

"We have been completely committed to the project from day one and this brings it a big step closer to reality.

Aside from the club’s training and administration facility, Lathlain will also house the Wirrpanda Foundation and provide opportunities to assist with some of the initiatives of the SAS Resources Trust, along with many other community developments.
