Wellington hosts New Zealand's biggest CrossFit event

Featuring top representatives from across New Zealand and Australia, the Wellington Cup CrossFit event is taking place over two days, 23rd and 24th August at the Kilbirnie Recreation Centre in Wellington.

The event will feature athletes participating in a range of CrossFit workouts, completing high intensity combinations of gymnastics, weightlifting and endurance tests as both individuals and teams.

Among 120 competing athletes is an All Star team, with some of the world's best CrossFit athlete including Lauren Fisher from San Diego, USA; Wes Piatt also from the USA and New Zealand's own Ruth Anderson Horrell from Invercargill.

A free position on the All Star team was filled through a competition among New Zealand CrossFit athletes.

To be selected, aspiarants had to share why they deserved the elite spot and get as many Facebook 'likes' as they could over a short time period.

As Wellington Cup Co-Director Alice Sciascia explains “what a great opportunity for an aspiring athlete to compete with the the best of the best."

The competition was won by Lefaotogi Paletasaia from Auckland.

Wellington Cup Co-Director Mike Young added "this weekend we’ll see CrossFit athletes push the limits of athletic performance through this thriving sport."
