Wayfinding signs lead the way in Cockburn

As part of a groundbreaking program to get residents active, installation began this week on more than 500 'wayfinding' signs in the City of Cockburn.

The installation, part of the 'Your Move' initiative that aims to increase the physical activity of Cockburn residents, already has 9,000 households signed up.

Western Australian Sport and Recreation Minister Terry Waldron said the Western Australian Government had entered into a partnership with the City of Cockburn to install 524 high-quality, non-slip pavement adhesive 'wayfinders' - signs to help residents find their way around the city on foot and by bike, leading to a more active and connected life.

Minister Waldron explained "there are 396 'Walk This Way' signs pointing out local destinations such as shops, libraries, parks and sporting ovals and the time needed to walk there.

"They also outline interesting or novel activities that can be done at each destination such as kite flying, getting the morning paper or playing footy with the kids.

"In order to remind cyclists and walkers to look out for each other as well as cars, 112 'Share the Path' safety signs will appear, as will 14 'Rack 'Em Up' signs pointing out new and existing bike racks across the City of Cockburn.

"It's the largest wayfinding project of its kind ever conducted in Australia."

The innovative project is being funded through the Western Australian Department of Sport and Recreation, the Department of Transport and the City of Cockburn. The program encourages locals to be more physically active and to use active transport.

Participants receive personalised coaching to encourage greater activity as well as access to useful local resources including an in-depth sport and recreation directory, travel maps of local walking and cycling paths, and an activity planner to help them set goals and track progress.

To date, about a quarter of the City of Cockburn's households have joined Your Move.
