Waikato Museum exceeds target by 20,000 visitors

Waikato Museum attracted 138,067 visitors in the past year, exceeding its annual target by 20,067 (17%) and attracting 27,865 more visitors than the previous year.

Waikato Museum Director Cherie Meecham says this is the second highest visitor number total for the museum in the last 10 years, and the result of a museum-wide drive to increase experience and engagement with the community.

Meecham stated “I believe this achievement is the result of a cohesive drive to better understand, communicate with and engage our visitors through a lively calendar of exhibitions and events, underpinned by great customer experience through everything we do.”

Visitor mumbers have been boosted by the introduction of the Waikato Museum Strategic Plan earlier this year - a five-year plan that identifies goals and outcomes to deliver the best museum experience for visitors, interact more with its community and connect to the Waikato River.

Hamilton  Mayor Julie Hardaker, who worked with Museum staff and stakeholders to develop the plan, explained “the Strategic Plan has given Waikato Museum a roadmap, and these results prove we are well on track to deliver the best museum experience we can, and realise the opportunities and potential Waikato Museum has as a leading regional museum and art gallery.”

Education numbers also rose at the Waikato Museum in the past 12 months, with the attraction’s educators welcoming 10,193 students compared to 5,547 the previous year.
