Visitor experience enhanced at Tasmania’s Horsetail Falls

Visitors to Tasmania’s natural attraction Horsetail Falls now have the opportunity to get right up close to the falls and enjoy spectacular views from Queenstown to the coast following the completion of the $600,000 stage two of the Horsetail Falls North-West walk and track upgrades.

A contract worth $438,699 was awarded to George Town-based CPT Engineering for the prefabrication and installation of steel sections of an elevated walkway, small pedestrian bridges and the lookout platform.

Trailblazer Tracks were given $137,444 to construct a gravel track with rock edging, drainage and rock step sections.

The project team, CPT Engineering and Trailblazer Tracks, worked closely with West Coast Council during the design process to ensure the track complemented the new mountain bike trail network.

The track improvements will also enhance access to Mount Owen and nearby mountain bike trails.

West Coast Mayor Shane Pitt said Council had been hearing positive feedback about the new extended path at Horsetail Falls, recently completed by Tasmanian Government.

“Following on from the pathway along the side of the mountain, the new section allows you to stand at the top of the falls, watching, and listening, to the sounds of water flowing,” Mayor Pitt noted.

“Also, it’s a great spot to take in the mountains surrounding Queenstown, the walk includes some steps and an incline but is suitable for those without bushwalking experience.

“Sturdy footwear is a must, as are clothes suitable to the day, bring your raincoat and beanie. The added extra is that the walk is also dog friendly, as long as your furry friend is on a lead.”

Tasmanian Minister for Parks and Environment, Nick Duigan enthused “It’s really exciting that this track has now reopened to the public for all to enjoy.

“The new section of track provides an added experience for visitors as it now extends right to the edge of the falls.

“The two kilometre track and new platform provide excellent views and it’s been a real pleasure to see the magnificent upgrades for myself.

“Parts of the track and car park were temporarily closed during construction to allow for the installation of bridges and walkways to be installed, so we thank everyone for their patience.”

The upgrade is part of the 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future to deliver outstanding experiences in our parks and reserves.

Minister Duigan added “we know the completed Horsetail Falls walking track will benefit the West Coast by providing another fantastic visitor experience that will attract people to the area, and boost the region’s economy.”
