Victorian Parliamentary inquiry into the Commonwealth Games invites events industry input
The Victorian Parliamentary Inquiry into the Commonwealth Games has restated is investigation, inviting the events industry to share its views on the $2 billion in support the Victorian Government promised when it cancelled the Games last year.
With the Scottish city of Glasgow this week confirmed as the host city for a slimmed-down 2026 Games - having received extra funding from Australia in addition to the $200 million paid in compensation by the Victoria Government, Australia is largely funding the 2006 edition.
Encouraging the events industry to contribute to the inquiry, Simon Thewlis, Director of Event PTY, stated “this week was a pretty sad and frustrating one for Victoria’s event industry.
“It is the week that saw confirmation that the 2026 Commonwealth Games - that were to have been held in Victoria - will now be held in Glasgow. And, that the people of Victoria will effectively be paying for the whole event.
“A submission can be as little as a paragraph or two entered into the online form or can be a separate document - depending on how much you want to say.”
The closing date for further submissions is 4th November 2024.
Thewlis added that the Business Events Australia survey is another opportunity for the industry to share its views on both the present and future direction of the events industry.
