Victoria acknowledges tennis' volunteers
Over 300 unsung heroes from grassroots tennis have this week been honoured at the inaugural Tennis Victoria Volunteer Breakfast at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
Speaking at the event to recognise the contribution of volunteers, Victorian Minister for Sport and Recreation Hugh Delahunty commended Tennis Victoria for recognising the many volunteers who work tirelessly to help tennis thrive in their communities.
Minister Delahunty stated "with the world's focus firmly on Melbournes Grand Slam Australian Open this week, it's fantastic to see a bit of that spotlight turned on thanking our dedicated volunteers.
"Before a point is played, there's a volunteer busy behind the scenes ensuring the nets are up to scratch, courts are ready to play and the scheduling is completed so that players can hit the courts and do their clubs and communities proud.
"This morning we celebrate the members of our community who give their all for their clubs, and encourage others to participate in the great sport of tennis."
Hosted by sports commentator Anthony Hudson, the breakfast was held at the MCG overlooking the bustling crowd of the Australian Open.
Minister Delahunty added "this breakfast is a reminder that there are sporting heroes not only at the elite, but at the grassroots level as well, at every club across Victoria.
"These inspirational people are just some of the 580,000-strong network of Victorian sport volunteers who give their time freely to make sport happen through their hard work and dedication."
"Since 2012, the Victorian Government has provided more than $290,000 towards Tennis Victoria initiatives to grow the sport at a grassroots level including funds for the development of the 'Game, Set, Match' online club and volunteer resource as well as building coach, official and volunteer capacity.
