VicHealth looks to fund innovative programs promoting healthy outcomes

VicHealth’s Growing Healthy Communities grants is funding up to $150,000 for Victorian organisations helping communities facing structural barriers to good health.

Sporting, community, cultural, recreational, creative, some local councils and other not-for-profit organisations are eligible to apply.

Applications are now open from a total funding pool of $4 million for innovative ideas that push the envelope to create better, fairer health outcomes for Victoria's young people and their families.

This includes programs such as community gardens, creative spaces and innovative ideas that push the boundaries of local spaces. The grants aim to increase access to healthy, local food and create opportunities for active play, recreation, sport, and art, to making places and spaces more culturally safe.

VicHealth Executive Manager Kris Cooney said that community-led organisations across the state will have the opportunity to help create a healthier, fairer Victoria.

Cooney noted “Many young Victorians and their families face structural barriers to good health. These barriers can be more significant for people from communities facing disadvantage.

“Community organisations play a critical role in driving positive health outcomes and we look forward to partnering with more amazing groups throughout Victoria.

“Growing Healthier Communities grants will empower Victorians by fostering safe, inclusive spaces, enhancing access to healthy food and nurturing meaningful social connections for a vibrant and sustainable future.”

Potential partners will be assessed on programs that provide opportunities to those who:

  • Come from lower-socioeconomic backgrounds,

  • Have disabilities,

  • Experience mental health or psychological distress,

  • Live outside metropolitan areas,

  • Identify as LGBTIQA+,

  • Are First Nations people or

  • Are from culturally and racially diverse communities.

Beyond the grant funding, there will also be facilitated capability building for recipients by connecting them with like-minded leaders, sharing valuable tips, and ensuring everyone has the tools, training, and support they need.

Funding guidelines are now available at vichealth.vic.gov.au, with applications opening today and closing 31st July.  Successful recipients will be advised in December 2024.
