Urban design award for Manuka Oval's sport lighting
Cox Architecture are pleased to announce that the new sports lights at Manuka Oval in Canberra have been awarded an Urban Design awards in this year's ACT Architectural Awards.
This prestigious award from the architectural profession recognises the design significance of the sport light towers and the unique approach by the design team in creating a subtle yet distinctive solution that will define the venue for years to come.
The unique design establishes the lighting tower as a series of sculptural elements set within the sensitive heritage landscape environment of Manuka Oval and Telopea Park that 'enhance the subtle character of this historic venue' whilst meeting the increasing demands of hosting major national and international events.
ACT Governments Territory Venue and Events eschewed a conventional approach to the design of light towers and encouraged the architectural team to develop a solution that would help to clearly define the Oval and precinct.
Cox Architecture worked closely with Abacus Lighting to develop the highly sculptural response under a tight construction deadline, allowing Canberra's first televised night game of cricket with the Prime Minister's XI on 29th January and of AFL on 8th March.
The new sport lights form part of a broaderstaged masterplan developed by Cox Architecture for the ACT Government through Territory Venue and Events.
Resurfacing of the oval will commence in the next few weeks.
