University reveals intentions for Stadium site

The University of Otago has announced the facilities it intends to locate at the Otago Stadium site.
The University plans to construct buildings of up to 13,400 metre2 as part of the wider stadium development that will include a a gymnasium and sports/recreational space of up to 6000 metre2; âFoundation Studiesâ facilities of up to 2500 metre2 (a stand-alone academic unit focused on preparing students for university study, incorporating teaching, learning, office and social space); and a student health centre, including a physiotherapy clinic and a pharmacy, occupying up to 2000 metre2.
Options for the remaining space are being explored.
University Vice-Chancellor Professor David Skegg says the list of facilities proposed to occupy the site brings together teaching and learning, sport and recreation, student health, childcare, and research on health and development.
"Most of these have a health or activity theme, and there should be synergies between them. For example, wouldn't it be wonderful if people could use the gym for an hour before they pick up their children from childcare? That is just one example of how the facilities could complement each other."
The University estimates that its facilities on the site will attract around 450,000 visits annually.
