Townsville City Council invests to deliver active and engaged city

Townsville City Council’s 2023/24 Budget and Operational Plan includes more than $13.3 million to further develop Townsville as an active and engaged city.

The impressive figure covers investments into sports facilities, the rockpool, aquatic centres, swimming lagoons, beaches, dog parks, public barbecues, galleries, theatre and community venues.

Mayor Jenny Hill said the budget reflected Council's commitment to further Townsville locals' enviable tropical lifestyle.

Mayor Hill notes "It's no secret that we live in paradise, with some of the world's best weather, beaches and events.

"As a city that prides itself on being a sustainable destination that embraces and participates in the arts, sports, events and recreational activities Council is proud to be delivering a significant investment into liveability and lifestyle in the 2023/24 budget to grow the vibrancy, benefits and facilities of Townsville as a world-class city.

"This includes $4.2 million being invested into maintaining our public pools and lagoons, our beaches including stinger nets, our dog parks and our barbecues and public toilets, because we know that these are the spaces that our community use the most while enjoying the city and suburbs."

Council is committed to continue to grow Townsville into a sustainable destination that embraces recreational activities and maintains assets for an active city.

Mayor Hill adds "we provide more than 500km of footpaths, more than 350 parks and 21 off-leash dog parks and all these assets are maintained which can all be enjoyed with your furry friend.

"The Strand is a 2.2km world-class beachfront promenade custom-built for enjoyment and home to bike and walkway paths, safe swimming beaches, picturesque picnic spots, playgrounds, exercise stations, a water park and restaurants and bars with to-die-for water views.

"Council also maintains stinger nets at The Strand North and South, Pallarenda, Balgal Beach, Horseshoe Bay and Picnic Bay and continue to fund the provision of lifeguard services at a number of spots across the city.

"We will be investing more than $1 million into operating and maintaining Townsville Stadium and Riverway Stadium, ensuring we continue attracting elite sport like the one-day international cricket series between Australia and Zimbabwe last year.
