Tourism Award for Canterbury Museum
Canterbury Museum is celebrating being awarded the 2014 Champion Canterbury Business Award for Tourism/Hospitality (medium to large enterprises) this week.
Museum Director Anthony Wright says "the Award is another feather in the cap for the Museum as we also achieved Qualmark Enviro Gold, Gold accreditation with Investors in People, and were named a finalist in this year's national Museums Aotearoa Awards for its Quake City attraction and for our record breaking visitor numbers to the RISE Street Art Exhibition."
This sentiment was supported by Michael McEvedy, Museum Board Chair, who congratulated staff on such a great accomplishment.
While there were, and continue to be, many challenges to face post-earthquakes, the team at Canterbury Museum worked tirelessly to ensure that, following the February 2011 Christchurch earthquake, the much loved cultural attraction was able to re-open fully to the public as of September 2011.
Wright added “with a lack of cultural activities open within the city, Museum staff recognised the need for there to be an 'anchor' for local visitors as well as tourists and this Award certainly recognises that achievement.”
Located in Christchurch’s central cultural precinct, the museum was established in 1867 with Julius Haast - whose collection formed its core - as its first director.
The building is registered as a ‘Historic Place - Category I’ by the New Zealand Historic Places Trust.
