Three men banned from all Queensland stadiums for two years
Three men accused of harassing and verbally abusing a group of women during the Pacquiao v Horn WBO welterweight world title bout at Brisbane’s Suncorp Stadium on Sunday have been banned from all Queensland stadiums for two years.
Video recorded by Channel 10 reporter Tegan George at Suncorp Stadium showed three men using derogatory language towards her and her friends.
"Never have I or my sports loving girl friends been so badly abused & sexually harassed. Went on for hours," she posted on Twitter along with the video.
Queensland Sports Minister Mick de Brenni responded to the abuse yesterday, asked Stadiums Queensland for advice on available options to respond to the behaviour.
Today he advised of the stadium ban, commenting “tThere is no place for sexism, harassment and racism in Queensland and there is no place for racism and sexism at our stadiums.
“The behaviour that has been reported is deeply offensive and it’s disgraceful.”
The three people who have received the ban were escorted from the stadium by Queensland Police.
Minister de Brenni added “the point at which you engage in this sort of offensive behaviour is the point at which you lose your right to watch events live at one of our venues.
“All of Queensland’s stadiums are family friendly venues and they should be places where people feel safe to enjoy world class events like the one we saw over the weekend.
“If you can’t enjoy sport without ruining other people’s enjoyment then you can hurl as much abuse as you want at your TV at home. You won’t be seeing anything live at any of our venues.”
Overall, the bout was an extraordinary success for Brisbane’s own Jeff Horn, now the new WBO welterweight champion.
The bout also delivered an estimated $24 million in economic benefits.
