Thousands gather for the Hobart Festival of Voices’ bonfire

Thousands of people crowded in Hobart's Salamanca Place last evening (10th July) for the most popular event on the Festival of Voices calendar, the Bonfire and Big Sing.

People began gathering at the bonfire site long before darkness fell on the cold winter evening.

The annual ceremony was kicked off by 200 singers who made their way through Salamanca Place led by German a cappella metal band, van Canto.

Their arrival signalled the lighting of the huge bonfire which was set in the middle of Hobart Street.

While the wood popped, the crowd was led in a huge rendition of Bill Withers' 1972 hit Lean on Me.

The free event was family friendly and popular with young and older people alike.

The Festival of Voices has attracted acts from interstate and overseas but for many people in Hobart the bonfire is the highlight.
