The National Aquarium Abu Dhabi launches new diving experience
The National Aquarium Abu Dhabi, the largest aquarium in the Middle East, has introduced new diving packages for both certified divers and those without any diving experiences.
Those who are not certified or do not have prior diving experience can dive into The National Aquarium’s main tank, which houses the Middle East’s largest shark and ray collection and includes hammerhead sharks, zebra sharks, eagle rays and a variety of other species.
Certified divers can dive in the main tank but also have the opportunity to swim with 2.5-metre-long sand tiger sharks, lemon sharks and hammerhead sharks.
Both experiences are approximately two hours and participants will be accompanied by a guide, who will teach them underwater sign language and help them take part in a live feeding demonstration. Prior to the dive adventure, the instructor will conduct a brief theory lesson to ensure that basic safety guidelines for shallow water diving are followed.
The National Aquarium Abu Dhabi is home to 46,000 creatures spread across 10 zones and is the first attraction to have opened in Al Qana, a new waterfront destination in Abu Dhabi’s Rabdan Area, which, when complete, will feature 11 tourism, lifestyle and retails destinations.
The attraction has 10 zones that house the marine animals, with each zone specifically themed: UAE’s Natural Treasures; Red Sea Wreck; Atlantic Cave; The Sub; Ring of Fire; Ocean Magic; Frozen Ocean; Flooded Forest; Bu Tinah Island and Back of House – each backed by a narrative and contains creatures that tie in with the theme.
Speaking on the dive experiences, Paul Hamilton, The National Aquarium general manager advised “we are absolutely delighted to be offering our visitors such an extraordinary dive experience with our vibrant selection of sharks and rays. Of course, the reality is that sharks are grossly misunderstood, and many of them are currently endangered due to overfishing.
“Through our immersive experiences, The National Aquarium hopes to dispel this fear and celebrate these magnificent and fascinating creatures.”
