Territorians encouraged to choose local hospitality venues this festive season

Aimed at boosting the Northern Territory’s hospitality industry and to keep their post COVID momentum going, Territorians are being urged to choose local venues this festive season.

Tourism and Transport Forum data shows domestic tourism spending in the NT has recovered faster than any other state or territory nationally compared with pre-COVID levels, and is now 30% higher than before the pandemic at $0.2 billion in October.

Tourism and Transport Forum data also shows that spending by international tourists in the NT has almost returned to pre-pandemic levels at an estimated $0.3 billion in October, down just 4% compared with October 2019.

Tourism and Transport Forum data provides information about how tourism and related sectors are performing, using credit and debit card spending.

Accommodation figures for both Darwin and Alice Springs are also positive in October 2022, with room occupancy rates for hotels up 8.4% and 8.8% respectively on October 2021.

The Northern Territory Government wants to see the strong recovery continue throughout the traditionally quieter months.

An influx of bookings for restaurants, pubs and clubs for Christmas and end of year parties will boost the economy but also provide local jobs.

The Northern Territory’s hospitality sector is thriving, and last week three of the NT’s local operators received national recognition at the Australian Hotel’s Association awards.

Berry Springs Tavern won the National Award for Excellence for Outstanding Achievement in Training, Lizards Bar and Grills was crowned Australia’s Best TAB Licensed Venue and the Landmark is the nation’s best sporting entertainment venue.

NT Minister for Tourism and Hospitality Nicole Manison notes “The Northern Territory has enjoyed the best recovery of any state or territory in Australia for domestic tourism spending and we want to keep that momentum going.

“If you’re planning a Christmas party choose a local hospitality venue and if you’re having a few drinks – why not book a room too!

“A strong and thriving tourism and hospitality industry provides so many well paying jobs across the Territory and is a major boost to our economy.”
