Teenager dies after fall at Sydney International Horse Trials

A 19-year-old equestrian rider has died after falling off her horse while competing at the Sydney International Horse Trials at Horsley Park in Sydney's south-west.

Caitlyn Fischer, from Bairnsdale in Victoria, was riding her 12-year-old gelding Ralph in a one-star cross-country competition when the accident occurred.

It has been reported that Fischer fell after her horse hit its foot on a fence it was jumping and fell onto her.

Immediate medical attention was provided by the on-course paramedic and doctor but the teenager was unable to be revived.

Equestrian Australia Chairwoman Judy Fasher explained "I don't know how it actually happened, but the horse fell and fell on the rider."

She added "on behalf of the whole sport I would like to extend our deepest sympathy to Caitlyn's parents Alisa Carr and Mark Fischer and her family.

"The thoughts and prayers of horse people all over the country are with Caitlyn's family and friends at this sad time."

Fasher said Fischer was a young, but experienced rider, stating "we scrutinise very carefully the level of experience that riders have and she would not have been allowed to enter this competition unless she had met the credentials that the sport sets out."

The rest of the trials have been cancelled.

Another young equestrian, 17-year-old Olivia Inglis, was killed in March in another NSW horse trials accident.
