Teenage gang attacks Melbourne festivalgoers

A group of youths have reportedly stormed through a crowd at a Melbourne community festival, stealing mobile phones, throwing rocks and assaulting people watching a fireworks display.

Witnesses reported that between 30 and 100 teenagers rampaged through the crowd at the Summersault Festival in Caroline Springs at around 10pm on last night (Saturday 11th February).

One teenager attending the family-friendly was hospitalised after being attacked by a group attacked him while stealing his mobile phone.

A witness told Melbourne newspaper The Age that she had her phone and wallet stolen and was “shoved in the stomach” by the gatecrashers.

She alleged “there would have been at least 100 Sudanese who just ran at us like a giant wave; it was a planned attack.”

However, other witnesses say females and Caucasian teens were also among the group.

Organised by the City of Melton, the alcohol-free event features music, food, an artisan market, rides and amusements – topped off with a fireworks finale.

As of Sunday morning no one had been arrested, but a Victoria Police spokeswoman advised investigations are ongoing.

As of Monday 13th February a statement from the organisers advised “we're extremely disappointed that the event was marred by the incidents that have now been widely reported (and) to have the event end as it did was incredibly disappointing.”

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or www.crimestoppersvic.com.au
