Tasmanian Government signs new Tourism and Hospitality Industry Skills Compact
Acknowledging ongoing workforce challenges, the Tasmanian Government has today signed the new Tourism and Hospitality Industry Skills Compact – marking the government’s commitment to securing the future of its tourism and hospitality workforce.
Tasmanian Minister for Skills, Training and Workforce Growth, Felix Ellis shared “The timing is perfect for a shared commitment to the future of the State’s Tourism and Hospitality Industry and the growth and sustainability of its workforce.
“The visitor economy is a large and important sector for Tasmania. It is valued by Tasmanians for its contribution to the economy and jobs, comprising 12.2 % of total Tasmanian employment. Directly, and indirectly, the visitor economy employs 37,300 people. More than half of those directly employed in tourism are working in hospitality jobs.
“We also know that our tourism and hospitality businesses are facing ongoing workforce challenges. This agreement is designed to help meet these industry needs and address training, retention and recruitment of a fit-for-purpose tourism and hospitality workforce that will underpin the sector’s ongoing success.
Minister Ellis said the Industry Skills Compacts are helping to ensure there is a focus on industry-led workforce development and fit-for-purpose training in Tasmania across a range of industries.
“Our vision is for a training and workforce development system that puts the learner at the centre. Our system must be accessible and job-focused, supporting stronger pathways to employment and skills for Tasmanians.
“Whether you are a local barista, or a trainee who works in hotels and venues, or professionals guiding visitors through some of the remote and beautiful parts of our State, each job plays a key role in building Tasmania’s reputation and our economy,” Minister Ellis added.
