Sydney’s Hyde Park Café to get major upgrade

The ongoing upgrade of Sydney’s Hyde Park, Australia’s oldest park, is continuing with the City of Sydney confirming the construction of a new open-plan café in Hyde Park South.

The upgrade will include improved public amenities, public seating, gardens, and paved areas in one of the busiest hubs of the city, with the work to be undertaken alongside the upgrade of Museum Station currently being undertaken by Transport for NSW.

Announcing the development, Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore stated “as part of the agreement between the City and Transport for NSW, we’ve committed to building the café, and we’re thrilled the stunning design is consistent with the heritage setting of Hyde Park and Museum station.”

In addition to the upgrade of the nearby transport hub, other major improvements to historic Hyde Park attractions will be completed in a similar time frame, with Lord Mayor Moore advising that the café and station upgrade has “coincided with our major improvement works on the ANZAC War Memorial, Pool of Reflection and the park path network.”

The Hyde Park Cafe upgrade will see the construction of:

• Two unisex toilets with one accessible to park users
• Seating for around 90 people
• A lift lobby with new paving
• More accessible routes from Museum Station to the Anzac War Memorial
• New garden beds, retaining walls and stairs
• Paving in the café and station surrounds

According to a City of Sydney statement, the new café and surrounding public infrastructure will help to enhance the park’s atmosphere and reputation as an “urban oasis … for the 1.2 million people who live, work or visit the city daily.”
