Sydney to boost infrastructure and leisure facilities

The City of Sydney has allocated $133 million to a comprehensive program of projects in the next 12 months to upgrade parks and cultural venues, to improve youth recreational facilities along with other city projects.

Funding allocated in the City's 2010/11 draft budget provides for the roll-out of a suite of capital works programs to enhance and build new facilities and services as well as meet the implementation timetable of Sustainable Sydney 2030 targets.

The final budget, following community input, will be considered in late June.

Significant construction schemes to be undertaken include Chinatown public domain improvements, the upgrade of Glebe Town Hall, Hyde Park Masterplan works, adaptive reuse of Burton Street Tabernacle, development of the Lillian Fowler Reserve, a major boost to the recreational facilities within Perry Park, improvement for the Crown/Cleveland/Baptist Streets intersection and Stage 1 development of Oxford Street.

The draft budget also provides funding to continue or complete a range of major projects. These include:

• Next phases of the 200 kilometre cycleways network;
• Enlivening CBD laneways;
• Oxford Street shopfront upgrades;
• Waterloo Oval Youth Facility;
• Pitt Street Mall Public Domain;
• Chippendale Childcare complex expansion;
• Water reuse system for Sydney Park; and
• Walla Mulla Park upgrade

The draft budget also commits the City to:

• The planting of 800 new street trees;
• Spending $15 million on trees and maintenance works;
• Allocation of $11 million towards improving footways and roadways; and the
• Release of tenders for small-level enhancement projects for Cook+Phillip Park, Andrew (Boy) Charlton Pool, Ian Thorpe Aquatic Centre and Victoria Park Pool.

Funding has also been proposed for Council endorsed initiatives in support of improved pedestrian and cycling amenities and traffic-calming programs across the city centre and inner city villages.

The City is proposing to broaden customer service facilities, and upgrade its corporate asset management, library management and website.
