Sydney FC stars hold football sessions for Mental Health Month

Sydney FC coaches have been holding free football sessions as part of a City of Sydney program to raise awareness of how physical exercise can reduce the effects of depression.

The City has been promoting the mental health benefits of active lifestyles in a high-profile exercise awareness campaign for the Black Dog Institute’s Exercise Your Mood Month.

Coaches from the two-time Hyundai A-League champions will put football enthusiasts through 45-minute sessions and mini competitions at the City’s multi-purpose King George V Recreation Centre in The Rocks.

Sydney FC’s Community Football Manager Paul Reid explained “being a high-profile sporting club in this great city, Sydney FC are very pleased to be part of Exercise Your Mood Month.

“We always look to encourage playing football and staying active at the Grassroots level within the community.

“We all know the benefits that exercise can have on us physically, but to be able to influence the wider community and their mental well-being through playing a globally recognised sport will be very rewarding.”

Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore said the City would do more to spread the word about how exercise can improve physical and mental wellbeing, adding “numerous studies have shown that people who exercise regularly experience fewer symptoms of depression and anxiety than those who don’t, so we want to encourage people to get moving.

“We’re hoping the Sydney FC coaches can inspire office workers with some free classes at KGV.”

Staff from KGV are also running two free circuit training sessions in Wynyard Park for all ages and fitness levels during lunch hour today (Tuesday 27th October). Information is available in the park about how physical training can assist with peace of mind.

Free community fitness classes have also been running at the KGV from Monday 26th October to Sunday 1st November.

KGV Recreation Centre is the City’s community hub within central Sydney for residents, workers and visitors, and is home to a gym and various sports competitions, such as basketball, futsal soccer, netball and volleyball.
