Superstorm Sandy devastates eastern USA boardwalk attractions
Hurricane Sandy and the downgraded Atlantic Ocean storm has caused damage to amusement and leisure operations along the east coast of the USA, with the famous boardwalk attractions of New Jersey and New York believed to have been particularly hard hit.
With theme parks and Halloween events cancelled due to the storm, damage to attractions in New Jersey resorts have seen parts of the Atlantic City Boardwalk and a 20 metre section of the Funtown Pier washed away.
Further north in New Jersey, the Casino Pier has apparently been completely washed away.
On Facebook, a statement from Casino Pier reads "as you might have heard or seen, our properties sustained a lot of damage as a result of Hurricane Sandy.
"Actual assessment of all the damage is still impossible. Our staff is reporting in and who we've heard from are ok. We will hopefully be able to get a better assessment in the upcoming days and will let you know how things are once we know. We appreciated your thoughts and prayers and we hope that all of you are doing well."
In the south of the State, Morey's Piers amusement park and waterpark ended its 2012 season prematurely on Monday and appears to have emerged from the superstorm relatively intact, although the beach abutting the attraction appears to have been severly eroded.
Morey's Piers has posted a number of images of the post-storm attraction on its Facebook page.
Will Morey, Vice Chairman of the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions and President/Chief Execuitve of Morey's Pier amusement park and waterpark was a keynote speaker at the 2012 Australian Amusement, Leisure and Recreation Association Conference so those who met him during his visit will undoubtedly wish to extend best wishes to Morey and his team.
For more than a century, boardwalks have been popular attractions along the east coast of the USA, with several pier attractions extended the boardwalk over the Atlantic Ocean.
