Sunway and Viacom agree to develop Nickelodeon-themed attraction in Kuala Lumpur

The Sunway Group has expanded its collaboration with global entertainment group Viacom to develop a RM100 million (US$31 million) Nickelodeon-themed attraction - the first in Asia - on its 88-acre Sunway Lagoon theme park in Kuala Lumpur.

The new attraction, to be known as Nickelodeon Explorer’s Oasis, will occupy 10 acres of the theme park and is expected to be completed in March 2015.

Nickelodeon is a top global entertainment brand focused on children and families.

Although the theme park’s contribution to group revenue is in the single-digit range, it is an important component of Bandar Sunway’s success.

Cheah said the theme park would have between 30 and 40 acres left after developing Nickelodeon Explorer’s Oasis, which comes with various water attractions.

The development will have its own retail shops, games as well as food and beverage outlets.

This is Sunway’s second collaboration with Nasdaq-listed Viacom, through its Viacom International Media Networks Asia subsidiary, after MTV World Stage, a three-year tie-up which started last year.

Sunway Group founder and Chairman Tan Sri Dr Jeffrey Cheah told media that the Group will sign a five-year collaboration with Viacom for the Nickelodeon partnership.

The Sunway Group has two theme parks currently, Sunway Lagoon and The Lost World of Tambun in Perak.

It is expected to build a third theme park in Iskandar Malaysia in Johor, where it has two parcels of land with a combined acreage of about 728 hectares.
