Subiaco recreation centre to reopen after asbestos scare

Eight months after its closure following asbestos fibres being found in its roof, the Lords Recreation Centre in the Perth suburb of Subiaco is set to reopen.

Closed in March, immediately after maintenance work revealed deadly airborne asbestos fibres, the Centre is expected to reopen in November.

Back in March, City of Subiaco Chief Executive Stephen Tindale explained that the closure of the facility was a "precautionary measure".

Since then, asbestos fibres have been removed at a cost of $2.5 million. Additional improvements to the Centre have included the replacement of mechanical ventilation systems and flooring through common areas while a solar hot water system has been installed to reduce heating costs.

With previous users forced to relocate to different facilities over the past eight months, a new Lords loyalty program will aim to provide incentives for members to return, as well as rewarding the loyalty of customers who had not requested a refund of membership fees.

Lords Recreation Centre is one of the leading aquatic and recreation centre arenas in Perth, combining a swimming pool, sport courts and fitness facilities and classes.

The Centre's website currently explains to users "thank you for your patience and understanding and we look forward to welcoming you back to Lords."
