Street League Skateboarding adds additional event at Ken Rosewall Arena

Ahead of its debut Australian visit, Street League Skateboarding (SLS) has announced an additional event coming to Ken Rosewall Arena this October. The venue will now host SLS Select Series Sydney on Friday, 6th October in addition to the previously announced SLS Championship Tour stop on Saturday, 7th October. Both are presented by Boost Mobile.

Los Angeles, London, and Barcelona are some of the renowned cities that have hosted SLS, with Sydney now set to join that exclusive list allowing Sydney fans to watch firsthand as both the top male and female skaters in the world compete in street skateboarding’s foundational organisation.

The SLS Select Series is an expanded qualification pathway for skaters to work their way into the global spotlight. Newly reimagined, it creates even more opportunity for skaters to showcase their talent and unique styles in hopes of securing a coveted spot at an SLS Championship Tour stop.

On 6th October, invited male and female skaters – both from across Australia and around the world – will compete at Ken Rosewall Arena at Sydney Olympic Park for a chance to earn a spot in the next day’s Championship Tour event.

Matt Rodriguez, SVP and GM of Street League Skateboarding, explained the catalyst for the Select Series “With only 30 roster spots available at each SLS Championship Tour stop, Select Series creates an environment for the world’s best to rise to the top. Historically, we’ve seen some skaters that are now household names - such as Olympians Yuto Horigome, and Sora Shirai - prove themselves at this level and then go on to win and podium at SLS Championship Tour events around the world.

“With Select Series we are able to add an extra day to our Sydney schedule, making for an incredible destination event. Double the skaters, double the skating, and double the stakes! Street skateboarding is progressing at an unbelievable pace right now in both the men and women’s division, so it is going to be exciting to be able to see it in an energetic SLS arena environment.”

Established in 2010, SLS is the street skateboarding’s first professional organisation and is recognised as the sport’s preeminent annual competition. Its events take place on custom-built, one-of-a-kind, SLS-certified plazas.

In 2022, Street League returned to indoor arenas for the first time in two years, which brought back the enhanced excitement and stature SLS introduced to the sport over a decade ago. After stops in Jacksonville, Seattle and Las Vegas, the competition built to the 2022 SLS Super Crown World Championship in Rio de Janeiro, which drew over 11,000 fans across two sold-out days.

Street League Skateboarding in Sydney is supported by the NSW Government through its tourism and major events agency Destination NSW.

Boost Mobile is the presenting partner for both SLS Sydney 2023 and the Select Series: Sydney.
