Storm delays seasonal opening of Lightning Ridge Water Theme Park
The summer opening of the Lightning Ridge Water Theme Park and adjacent Olympic Pool has been delayed following a large storm that caused serious damage to the complex.
The roof of an amenities block was torn off the building during a storm last week, and landed in the outdoor swimming pool and waterpark.
The community managed facility in Northern NSW is operated by the Lighting Ridge Pool Association.
Association President Lily Sisa says assessments are still being done as to the extent of the damage but fears that repairs will be costly.
Sasa told the ABC "it's quite a large amenities block and the entire roof has come up so it has to be all fixed up.
"Then we had a huge palm tree fall down as well which hit the edge of our pool so, we've got a little bit of work there."
Sisa says the water park will stay closed until repairs are finished and works to the main pool are also running behind, adding "we had a lot of broken pipes in our Olympic swimming pool underneath, the whole pool had to be dug up fixed up the pipes and then all the holes re-concreted and that's still being done at the moment.
"It has to still be painted as well so we've been a bit delayed.
"We're hoping to open our water theme park side of it by the second Monday of the school holidays, by about the 30th (September)."
Play equipment at the facility is being fixed with new fibreglass and repainted.
The Association's indoor pool was unaffected by the storm is operating as normal.
