Star Entertainment Chief Executive Matt Bekier resigns amid ongoing inquiry

Star Entertainment Group's managing director and Chief Executive, Matt Bekier has resigned amid an ongoing inquiry into Sydney's Star casino.

The inquiry by the Independent Liquor and Gaming Authority into Star - Australia’s second largest casino operator – is to determine whether it has been complying with statutory obligations and is fit to hold a NSW casino license. The company is contending with an investigation by financial regulators amid money-laundering allegations.

Bekier has advised he will step down from the board immediately noting he is "accountable for the effectiveness and adequacy of the company's processes, policies, people and culture.”

Star Entertainment Group chairman John O'Neill advised "Mr Bekier said the right thing to do was for him to take responsibility."

The Australian Transaction Reports and Analysis Centre (AUSTRAC) launched a probe in June last year into Star's casino in Sydney over concerns of ongoing customer due diligence and compliance with laws.

The inquiry continues today.
