SportWest appoints new Chief Executive

SportWest has announced the appointment of Matt Fulton as its new Chief Executive.

Announcing the appointment, SportWest Chairman, Michael Beros advised "we are so excited to be able to welcome Matt to SportWest.

“Rob Thompson has been CEO of SportWest since 2006/07 and has fulfilled the role not only with great success, but with great pride. His professionalism and commitment to West Australian sports has been amazing and over the past 18 months he has worked diligently on the continued evolution of SportWest to which he can now proudly handover to Matt, whose strong leadership, communications and advocacy skills will help drive the transition we have been preparing for."

Under the mantra of Challenge, Change, Create the SportWest Board commenced planning for Thompson’s retirement in April 2020.

Now, following a highly competitive recruitment process, Fulton’s appointment to the key leadership role comes at a very important and strategic time not only for SportWest, but for sport in Western Australia.

Looking forward to his new role, Fulton stated "I’m delighted and feel challenged to be joining SportWest, Western Australia’s peak sport industry body at this time. It’s a privilege to be offered the opportunity to action the Strategic Directions prepared in conjunction with the members and to be able to build upon the positive platform set by the SportWest Board and retiring CEO Rob Thompson.

"Never before has sport been more important to the social, health and economic future of our State. Sport plays a vital role in building strong and resilient communities. With an amazing network of more than 500,000 participants in organised sport, over 200,000 volunteers and 5,500 clubs, I look forward to engaging collaboratively with the diverse stakeholders that contribute to the delivery of sport and the lifestyle for all Western Australians."

"In the role of CEO with Westcycle for the past six years, Matt has demonstrated the qualities, industry knowledge and established the respectful relationships that should allow him to smoothly transition to our organisation in mid-February 2021. On behalf of the SportWest Board and members, I welcome Matt and enthusiastically anticipate his commencement.”

Thompson’s legacy and will be formally acknowledged at the 2020 RAC SportWest Awards in February next year 2021.
