Sports Environment Alliance announces inaugural Green Sports Day

By Nigel Benton

Introducing a global environmental initiative to Australia, the Sports Environment Alliance (SEA) has today announced the local launch of Green Sports Day.

Aiming to unite sporting clubs, organisations and fans on 6th October 2025 to demonstrate the power of sport in driving climate action - this year marks the first time the initiative will be formally hosted in Australia, bringing together the nation's diverse sporting industry.

Established in 2016 in the USA by SEA partners the Green Sports Alliance, Green Sports Day has inspired millions of sports fans and hundreds of organisations worldwide to harness the influence of sport to protect the planet.

Green Sports Day is designed to be inclusive of all levels of sport, from grassroots community clubs to elite professional organisations, emphasising that every action counts, big or small. Whether you're a local tennis club installing solar panels, a stadium switching to batteries, or fans pledging to reduce single-use plastics, Green Sports Day celebrates collective environmental action across the sporting landscape.

Green Sports Day 2025 encourages sporting organisations to engage their local communities through climate and environmental action, demonstrate sustainability commitments, and inspire others to step up their involvement.

Sports Environment Alliance Chief Executive, Adam Cheyne stated "Australian sport has always been about bringing communities together, and now we have the opportunity to unite for our most important match yet.

"We're calling on all of the sporting industry, from clubs, volunteers, staff, and fans, to consider making an environmental or climate-related pledge. From the fan to the elite athlete, from the volunteer coordinator to the stadium manager, everyone has a role to play in protecting the future of sport."

The timing of Green Sports Day 2025 is significant as the nation's sporting community increasingly recognises the urgent need for environmental action. Rising temperatures, extreme weather events, and changing seasons are already impacting training schedules, match conditions and sporting infrastructure nationwide.

Participation in Green Sports Day can take many forms, allowing organisations and individuals to contribute according to their capacity and circumstances. Simple actions include lighting venues in green, sharing Green Sports Day content on social media, improving recycling habits, conducting sustainability audits, or appointing a Green Champion within clubs.

Green Sports Day 2025, presented by Sports Environment Alliance, represents more than a single day of action; it's about building momentum for ongoing environmental stewardship within Australian sport across the coming weeks, months, and years. The initiative recognises that sport has unique cultural power to influence behaviour and inspire positive change across communities.

Sporting organisations, clubs, venues, and individuals interested in participating in Green Sports Day 2025 can register their involvement and access resources at www.sportsenvironmentalliance.org/green-sports-day
